Holiday Message from Tom
Posted December 01, 2023
LAF Family,

As we approach the joyous holiday season, I wanted to take a moment to extend my warmest wishes to each of you and your families.  May this festive time be filled with love, laughter, and the warmth of family and friends.  Let us appreciate all the memorable moments and accomplishments we have all been able to share.  As we bid farewell to the current year, let’s welcome in the New Year with excitement and anticipation.  May it bring new opportunities, new friendships, continued growth, and even greater success for LAF.
Thank you staff and volunteers for your hard work, commitment, and passion throughout the year.  Your contributions have not gone unnoticed and I am truly grateful to lead such an exceptional team.  I look forward to another year of collaboration and shared achievements.
Wishing you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year filled with joy, fun, and good health.
Warm regards,

Tom Wilson
Executive Director

LAF's Social Prescription Program receives support from Caesars Windsor Cares

LAF's Social Prescription Program receives support from Caesars Windsor Cares
Posted November 10, 2023

Our Social Prescription program has received over 270 referrals!
Originally funded by the OACAO and now we are so grateful for the support from Caesars Windsor Cares ($10,000) to help us continue funding this program!

What is Social Prescription? In a nutshell:
Step 1: Someone goes to the doctor about an issue (ex. depression from loneliness, declining physical health from lack of exercise)
Step 2: The healthcare professional (doctor, nurse, counsellor, etc.) writes a PRESCRIPTION for that person to go to Life After Fifty for help with that issue (ex. socialization, exercise classes, etc.)
>> The funding allows us to cover that person's membership fee, which removes any financial barriers. We also have a Social Prescription Coordinator on staff who will help new members find the programs that are right for their needs!

This is a new, holistic approach to healthcare, where needs are being met by more than just prescribing a new medication. The results are in! Depression is alleviated, physical health is improving and older adults in our community are thriving!

Healthy, Active Aging Talk - Nov 1

Healthy, Active Aging Talk - Nov 1
Posted October 31, 2023

One of the most important ingredients for living a healthy, active life as people approach their retirement years is social relationships, say University of Windsor health experts who will be making a public presentation this week on aging and wellness.

“If I could only say one thing, it would be to focus on the relationships that have already been created in someone’s life and fostering those, as well as reaching out to create new relationships,” said Mike McMahon, fitness co-ordinator for the University of Windsor Lancers athletics and recreation. “Making sure that people do have those relationships forged prior to retirement is probably a great way to look at it. We prepare financially for retirement, so let’s spend the same amount of time preparing socially for retirement.”

The Healthy, Active Aging talk starts at 7 p.m., Nov. 1, in the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Human Kinetics building at 2555 College Ave.
